Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is humidity so important?
A: Cigar tobacco is usually grown in areas where the relative humidity is about 60-75% and this is the optimal range for storage and flavor development. Once a cigar has dried out it can not be rehydrated to its original condition which is why a stable long acting humidification system is so important.

Q: What factors affect humidity in my humidor?
A: The degree of air leakage between the lid and box, the type of wood used, the number of cigars (a full humidor is better than an empty one), the frequency of opening (it can take hours for the humidity to return to the desired level after each opening), the temperature and the relative humidity outside the humidor.

Q: I see humidors or humidifiers which say they will last for a month or year without adding water, do they work?
A: No. They can only work if the “humidor” or container is airtight but this allows anaerobic bacteria and mold growth. If you doubt me put a few drops of water in a zip-lock with a couple cigars and check it in a month. Yuck! Only humidors with the Oshkosh Premier Humidifier can last for months as it holds 10 ounces of water.

Q: Why Humidity?
A: So what is the big deal about humidity and why it is so important to a cigar? Cigar tobacco is grown in areas where the relative humidity is about 60-75% and this is the optimal range for storage. Once a cigar has dried out it can not be rehydrated to its original condition which is why a stable long acting humidification system is so important. Other factors which can affect the humidity within your humidor include the degree of air leakage between the lid and box, the type of wood used, number of cigars (a full humidor is better than an empty one), the frequency of opening (it can take hours for the humidity to return to the desired level after each opening), the temperature and relative humidity outside the humidor. Even the Oshkosh Premier Humidifier can not overcome a leaky humidor in a dry desert...but it will do better than any other comparable humidifier.
